Love & Trust

We live in a very untrusting world. Not that it's a new revelation to me, but I'm just reminded of it today. Just take a look around. Kids being taught to not entertain strangers (not that it's not good, but to a certain extent), us shutting out salesmen who come knocking on our door just in case we don't get conned, people living their lives in suspicion of even their loved ones. Marriages are commonly accompanied by pre-nuptial agreements, all so that one's so-called "rights" are protected. And all these because we simply do not trust people. All because we fear being hurt or framed. We build walls around ourselves to keep us safe while the world outside can just kill one another. And I don't blame us totally either. With scores of stories an headlines everyday about people being hurt or trust betrayed, it's totally human to want to pull out of the chaos and defend ourselves.

But does that make us effective as the salt and light of the world? Obviously not. There's absolutely no way to reach out to people who need Christ if all we do is protect ourselves. True, the Bible does say that we shouldn't trust completely in man but instead completely in God, but Jesus also said "Love one another". And love without trust is not love. To love someone means to put yourself at risk of being hurt by putting the other party's interest ahead of our own. And we do understand that people tend to let us down from time to time, but it shouldn't discourage us from continuing to love and trust one another. We love because He first loved us... ;)

Just thoughts running through my head at this particular moment.
