Say NO to SEXUAL HARASSMENT!!!

For Contextual Studies, Peter Michelle Lee and I had decided to choose the above topic because we wanted to educate the people about sexual harassment in an unconventional way. We dressed ourselves in layers of clothes and held up a sign that says "Do Women Have To Wear Like This To Prevent Sexual Harassment?" to make people realize that women do not feel safe anywhere anymore because we get sexually harassed almost everyday in one way or another.

We gave a speech on sexual harassment to inform people that sexual harassment can happen to anyone in any form and ways. It is a situation whereby actions or words are executed in such a way that it makes us feel uncomfortable and violated. In this modern and technology craze environment, even an inappropriate SMS and e-mail can be considered as sexual harassment.

Women often feel that it is their fault that men behave that way but in actual fact, it is not our dress sense or the way we interact with the opposite sex that invites the situation; being friendly does not gives a man the license to sexually harass us! Especially at the work place, a certain code of conduct and practice must always be observed. Workers should be professional when interacting with each other. It is about respecting one another.

Other than that, we also made people sign a petition to show their support in saying no to sexual harassment. Besides that, we have also prepared stickers that say BITCH: What's wrong with a female dog?, A guy who sleeps his way to the top is innovative; a woman who does the same is a SLUT?, SON OF A BITCH: What's wrong with the son of a female dog?, and MOTHERF*CKER: Why can't it be Fatherf*cker?. The purpose of these stickers was to provoke the people to think that sexist remarks are part of sexual harassment as well. We gave them to people who signed the petition as well as to those who dropped by just to hear the speech about sexual harassment.

We also displayed articles on fighting sexual harassment, examples of sexual harassment, cases of women being harassed at workplace, and pictures of women being harassed. We wanted to play our theme song on the CD player, which was "Can't Hold Us Down" by Christina Aguilera but we could not do that because one of the other groups was playing their own music and it would have drowned out our music hence we did not play the song at our booth. We wanted to put that song because the song lyric was relevant to our statement.

The highlight of the whole campaign is the part where we wore a sandwich board that says "Say NO to SEXUAL HARASSMENT. HONK if you SUPPORT us!", stood at the side of the road and tried to make cars honk at us! Some of them might have honked for the fun of it because we were cheering them on. Some did not bother to honk probably because they thought the whole idea was silly or they thought we were doing it for fun. We noticed that some of the men who honked have their wives or girlfriends in the car with them and some have children in the backseats too. This proves that not only women would take heed on sexual harassment, but men who were fathers and husbands were concerned about this issue and they were supportive as well in saying no to sexual harassment.

For those who honked, who were men in their 20s, 30s and 40s, and women who were in their 20s and 30s, we could tell from the expression of the drivers that they were proud of us somehow because we were bold enough to make a statement against sexual harassment. It was as though we were the voice of many women who never dared to speak up. We cheered every time some car honked at us and some of our classmates were cheering for us as well. We are pleased that the campaign was a success!
