Falling In Love?

Many people mistake the feeling of "falling in love" as a sign from God that it's alright to marry an unbeliever. However, it's never God's will for His people to marry unbelievers. When people disobey God in this regard, they often pay a very bitter price. Intense problems are likely to surface, because the non-believer is not only uninterested in the things of God, but oftentimes actually opposes them.

God knew what He was doing when He told His people not to marry unbelievers. He's not trying to keep believers from something good. Rather, He's trying to spare them needless pain and suffering. The danger is that when people think they're "in love", they sometimes ignore God's clear warning and deceive themselves. The result is tragedy and heartbreak.

Ezra 9:13 & 14

13 "And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, since You our God have punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us such deliverance as this,
14 "should we again break Your commandments, and join in marriage with the people committing these abominations? Would You not be angry with us until You had consumed us, so that there would be no remnant or survivor?

DON'T MARRY UNBELIEVERS

Ezra discovered that the people had broken the covenant of God by marrying unbelievers and pagan wives. God specifically forbade them to marry unbelievers , because He did not want His holy people to mix their seed with people who worshipped demons, practicing "abominations". To do so would corrupt and defile them.

WWJD Power Statement

To become emotionally attached to a non-believer is dangerous. Your reason and spirituality can be clouded by emotion, which can create a painful no-win situation. It's far wiser to date those whose lives are centered around the same Jesus you serve.

Don't become partners with those who reject God. How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong? That's not partnership; that's war. Is light best friends with dark?
- 2 Corinthians 6:14

SERIOUS BUSINESS

It's important that we understand just how seriously God views this business of marrying unbelievers. Pagan wives and foreign women had caused the downfall of many of Israel's leaders, such as Solomon, Jezebel and her evil allegiance to the false god Baal caused great suffering for God's people.

This same warning against romantic involvement with non-believers applies today. Men and women of God have no business dating or marrying non-believers. It's simply playing with fire. Ezra is a model of the Holy Spirit who calls for a complete cutting off of these unhealthy relationships.

(Read Ezra 10:1-44)

Love sees no color, no race, no religion
We are the same as the rays from the sun
Love sees no color, no race, no religion
Only through love can we live as one.
